Giants Shutout the Dodgers (Part 2 of 2)

We started this week with photos from the June 27th Giants shutout of the Dodgers, so let's bookend the week with some more. We focused on pitching and fielding last time, so today we'll focus on sliding and batting. Did I have that planned? No, but it works. We'll end this set with the game's final out and the team's on-field celebration.

I think that hit went foul.


In fairness to that guy, he did not swing that late. He did strike by totally whiffing the ball on that swing, so I don't feel to bad about photoshopping that ball in to add some drama. In the real pitch, the ball was off the frame. I copied that ball from another shot, gave it some motion blur to match the approximate motion blur on the bat, and that was that. So, yes, he missed, but he didn't swing super late.


Last strike of the game, and it was over.


It's time to celebrate.

Giants Shutout the Dodgers (Part 1 of 2)

Something odd happened this morning. Between last night when I wrote this entry and today, all the text and photos were erased. I blame myself. In order to get Google + to post a notice about the blog, I have to update it. So I might have updated it before all the content loaded. Oops. Here, now, are the photos but humanity will forever lose out on the fun quips that once accompanied them.

San Francisco Giants Opening Day

So last Monday I did not get out to take infrared shots with my K-7. In fact, I didn't get out of the office for more than 12 hours at all. So, today's post will be some late shots from the Voigtlander Perkeo outing on April 13th. I didn't finish that roll then, but did last week. Here are some shots, most of which were taken on opening day around AT&T Park.

K-7 Experimentation

When my K-7 returned from the repair shop the other week the repair team had installed the latest firmware version. At first I was unhappy because it reset all my settings -- which took me about two hours to undo -- but also included a new mode I don't recall my camera having before -- reversal film. It's a setting on the color mode menu. So I gave it a shot and it's cut my editing time by 50%. The colors are deeper, the contrasts improved. In short, this is how I edit my images to be. So I'm pleased. Here are some color results. All shot with my Takumar 50mm 1:1.4 (the other lens given to me for scanning slides.)




Both of these were shot wide-open to test this lens' capabilities at f1.4 Not shabby.


A frog outside of Rainforest Cafe at Fisherman's Wharf. To me it looks like the frog is going to eat children as though they were large flies.

Not Every Day has Ten Good Photos

Yesterday was one of those rare, prolific days that photographers love -- every shot seems to be perfect. Some mix of gear, film, light, and timing combine through nothing shy of divine intervention to create a nice mix of quality shots across the whole roll.

Today is not a repeat. The Minolta SRT102 and 135mm Celtic lens are a great combination and work very well together. But none of the shots today have a great 'wow' factor. That said, let's see what we've got.


1/1,000th, f6.3. The Giants' mascot moonlights as The Giants' bouncer. He's clearly taking no gruff.


1/60th, f22. "There is Light Somewhere" -- Noor. This shot exemplifies why correction filters are useful. I left this lens unfiltered and wish that I had brought a green for this shot. The paint, red, blends into the pavement almost invisibly. Had I used a green filter, then it would have been near-black against charcoal shadows. Much more easily read.
